Presumed Dead Steve

Presumed Dead Steve

You have a Tony’s Fake/Temporary Death list (which is amazing!) but do you happen to have any fics with Steve’s fake or temporary Death? Or presumed death fics? Sorry if you do and I’ve missed it!

I haven’t done that one yet, and it’s a great trope, so we should definitely have a list for that!  There are obviously a lot of comic-based fics where Steve does “die” at least temporarily, but here are some suggestions for you.  If anyone has other Presumed Dead Steve ideas, please add them in the comments.

Any Road by @sheronm: Three months after defeating Thanos, Steve Rogers wakes
up in the middle of a cornfield, with no memory of how he got there. No
memories of anything, not even his own name. The only valuable on him
is a flip-phone with a single contact number. Tony Stark will do anything to help him remember, but he won’t even admit they are friends.

Better In Time by @sheronm:
Tony doesn’t call until there’s live footage of Steve going down in a hail of bullets. Steve misses his call.

A Face to Meet the Faces That You Meet by valtyr:
Identity porn. AU post Cap’s death in ways that should be pretty obvious.

a black evening by @nasafic:
“Tony,” Natasha interrupts gently, despite the tears welling in her eyes. “Steve is dead.”

Shrapnel by schweet_heart:
Steve is missing, presumed dead, and all Tony has left are his dogtags and a shitload of survivor’s guilt. Written for this avengerkink prompt.

not here by @laireshi:
Tony looks at the body lying on the table and thinks, This is wrong.

Head Over Feet by @robintcj: It had sounded like a good idea at the time. Tony
Stark, genius and heir to the Stark fortune, didn’t expect to fall in
love with the kind, handsome soldier he’d picked up at a bar that he had
only gotten into because of a particularly well-crafted fake ID. He
didn’t expect to spend the best week of his life with a funny, wonderful
artist who would be shipping off to war in only days. And he definitely didn’t expect that soldier to die before they could even try to build something. He
tries to move on with his life and find a way to feel whole, but after
one too many disappointments, Tony gives up on the idea of happiness
altogether.Of course, then he finds himself on a street in New York, covered in coffee and having the shock of his life.

Look After Your Heart by @sineala:
It’s easy to make bad decisions when there’s no one left to stop you.
(An AU where there’s no such thing as time bullets. Steve dies on the
courthouse steps. A year later Tony wakes up with no memory of the war
and fails spectacularly at coping with the fallout.)

To the Victor by @thegraytigress: Nightmares are real.  Tony is living one.  It’s awful,
unending, torturous.  It’s driving him mad.  It’s killing him.  He just
wants to wake up and go back to his life with Steve, a life filled with
love and happiness. Yet every day the hell of reality presses down,
because Steve went on a mission. Steve made the ultimate sacrifice.
Steve is never coming home. And Tony can’t let himself believe it.

All That Remains by Kijikun:
In retrospect, it was the answer to all of the questions he’d carefully
avoided asking, all of the things he hadn’t wanted to look at too
closely.
