Disabled but Still Avengers

Disabled but Still Avengers

Thanks for all your lovely recs! I’m looking for fics where Steve and/or Tony have a disability (blind, wheelchair, can’t hear, can’t speak) but still become Avengers and such. All the feels and love!

There are some Tony with a Brain Injury/Aphasia recs, Colorblindness and Blind!Tony recs, but here are some others you might like, though I will say a lot of them involve temporary disability.  Some great reads, though!

Man With a Thousand Words by mysecretscreenname: (mute tony)

Thumb, Index and Pinky Extended by Eudoxia:
Tony Stark is twenty-one when he loses his voice. It shouldn’t matter,
but in a world where the first words your Soulmate says to you are
marked on your skin, it can be pretty damn annoying.

Silence Takes Away His Virtue by Kiwifruitjuice:
Tony has gone mute after his father, Howard, abuses him sexually and
physically. Enrolled in college at the age of 14, Tony has to manage
being silent, being alone, and being broken.

(Don’t Wanna Be) All By Myself by Tito11:
In which Tony is deaf, but that was never really the problem.

Get Up, Steve by NataliaJane:
After a tragic accident during a mission Steve Rodgers falls into a
temporary paralysis. Not only does his condition leave him feeling alone
and depressed, his marriage with Tony and relationship with their son
falls apart. Three simple words help Steve realize what he’s about to
loose if he doesn’t make a change “Get up, Steve”

Are You Okay? by TheAllMagicalCreature:
Tony has an accident. When he wakes up, everything is silent.

In Plain Sight by Tiaowueli: Tony is having a hard time coping with his new
situation. A new school year starts with no friends, no parents and no
need for pity. Hiding a disability is never easy, especially in high
school. Where does one go when your life is just spiraling out of your
control?Steve just started school in a new body for a recent
growth spurt in Junior ROTC camp, maybe this is the year his whole life
changes. (disabled Tony)

as they learned to see by often_adamanta:
Tony stayed silent through her terse explanation, anger growing. When
Natasha was finished, he asked, “So you’re telling me that Steve’s been
missing for almost two months, most likely kidnapped by an unknown
organization, a force which employs two brilliant but completely crazy
scientists that hate Stark Industries because they were refused jobs on
the basis of their psych evals, and I’m only hearing about this now?”

(temporarily mute/blind Steve)

if I should stumble by AvengersTime:
“The gunshot wound had been too infected, in between the lack of
care and the blood loss there was no choice but to amputate the leg from
above the knee and down.“
Tony’s captivity had changed everything about him, he gained and lost
valuable things, and led him to be Iron Man. He’s perfectly okay with
his secrets to remain secrets, but he didn’t expect his team to actually
care. Also, unconsciously falling in love with Captain America was definitely not part of the plan.

Haywired by @winterstar95: After Steve gets wounded in battle and then recovers,
things change and Tony has to find out why. Or the one where Steve goes
blind and then really weird things happen.  “Are you, like, completely blind?”  “Yeah,” Steve says and doesn’t lift his head.   “That
doesn’t scare the shit out of you even a little bit?” Tony asks,
because if it doesn’t Tony is just going to fly his own butt into the
Hudson, and refuse to come out for days. What the hell?  Can’t anything
unnerve this guy?

Can You Feel My Heart Beating? by snarkstark:
Tony sighed, handing Rhodey his helmet and very pointedly rolling his eyes. “I still don’t know why I’m here.”
Tony hates football, but thinks he can learn to love it if they’re all as hot as Steve Rogers. (deaf Steve)

The Sex Shop Around the Corner by sadieb798: Tony really hates his job. When he tries to figure out
what he wants to do next, Tony decides that instead of making weapons
for war, he should make things for pleasure. So he decides he’s going to open his own sex shop. (deaf Steve)

All the Difference in the World by @winterstar95:
It’s Tony’s luck that on his first date with Steve away from the
Academy, they end up abducted by AIM agents and it looks like their boss
just might reveal Tony’s big secret.

You’ll Feel a PInch by HappyPoodle:
Everyone thought the Arc Reactor had fixed everything. It had saved
Tony’s life, that was true. But having a giant hole with your chest came
with complications. Tony had it under control; no need to bother the
team with his problems. He was enough of a burden as it was. And it was
fine….mostly.

Breathe and Release by exfatalist:
Since being honorably discharged from the Army after an injury sustained
while deployed in Afghanistan, Steve Rogers has found a new center of
balance as a yoga instructor at a small Manhattan gym. It just stands to
figure that one day media crisis-plagued billionaire Tony Stark would
come waltzing in and throw everything off. As he guides his
controversial new student on the journey to inner peace, Steve learns to
deal with some negative energy of his own, and finds something
unexpected on the way. [ Non-Powered AU, Modern!Steve. ]

Show Me What I’m Looking For by capsicleironman:
Steve was finally beginning to prove his capability and independence in
the 21st century when an attack on the city leaves him blinded. Now,
back at square one, he’ll have to learn about more than just the future;
he must learn to re-navigate his whole life. The other Avengers are all
endlessly supportive, always there to lend a helping hand, but it’s
Tony’s no-nonsense, do-it-yourself approach that might just get Steve
back on his feet for good.

Blind Date by AnonEHouse: Steve can’t see, which opens Tony’s eyes.(Takes place in a
movieverse where Tony was always gay & the Avengers stayed together
after the Chitauri invasion. The blindness is known to be only
temporary.)
